Chantilly

A western Fairfax County community steeped in Civil War history, minutes from Dulles Airport, and home to the Udvar-Hazy Center and Sully Historic Site.

Chantilly is served by two residential zip codes: 20151 and 20152. (20153 is a PO Box–only zip, and 20598 is non-residential.) Worth knowing: 20152 is shared with South Riding, which sits in Loudoun County, so county, school system, and tax details can differ from one Chantilly address to the next. We always confirm the exact jurisdiction for any property.

Chantilly is in western Fairfax County, about 25 miles west of Washington, D.C. via I-66 and Route 50, with Washington Dulles International Airport bordering it to the north. The community's center is around the intersection of Route 28 (Sully Road) and Route 50.

History Chantilly takes its name from the Chantilly Plantation, established in the early 19th century and named for the Château de Chantilly in France. On September 1, 1862, the Battle of Chantilly (also called Ox Hill) was fought nearby, and two Union generals — Isaac Stevens and Philip Kearny — were killed. Today, Ox Hill Battlefield Park preserves a small piece of the battlefield. Sully Historic Site, a Fairfax County Park Authority property on the National Register of Historic Places, preserves the home of Richard Bland Lee, Northern Virginia's first congressman, with buildings constructed between 1794 and 1801. It offers guided tours, self-guided walks, and seasonal programs like its November "Sully Illuminated" evening tour.

Close to Home The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's companion location, is right here in Chantilly. Admission is free (parking is $15), and the collection includes the Space Shuttle Discovery, the Enola Gay, and the SR-71 Blackbird.

Schools Chantilly is served by Fairfax County Public Schools. Chantilly High School, Franklin Middle School, and Rocky Run Middle School are within the community, and Westfield High School sits just outside it. For South Riding addresses, schools are Loudoun County schools. Assignments vary by address, so we recommend verifying school zones for any specific home.
