Catlett

A historic village in southeastern Fauquier County, rooted in railroad and Civil War history, with a Route 28 connection toward Manassas.

Catlett is served by one zip code: 20119.

Catlett sits in southeastern Fauquier County, southeast of Warrenton (the county seat). Route 28 — known as Catlett Road in Fauquier County — runs through the village and leads northeast through Nokesville to Manassas.

A Village Built Around the Railroad Catlett grew up around the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, which was laid through the area in 1852. The village was first known as Colvin's Station, then Catlett Station, and later simply Catlett, and in its heyday it was a busy hub for mail, telegraph, and transportation. Its crossroads at the Cedar Run bridge drew the businesses that sustained the community.

That same railroad made Catlett a Civil War target. On August 22, 1862, Confederate cavalry under General J.E.B. Stuart raided the Union camp here, capturing more than 300 prisoners, supplies, and General John Pope's orders and dispatches, days before the Battle of Second Manassas. The raiders tried but failed to destroy the Cedar Run railroad bridge.

Catlett Historic District Today, the Catlett Historic District — listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008 — preserves the village's character, with late-19th- to mid-20th-century buildings in styles like Greek Revival and Colonial Revival, including Trinity Church (1872) and a 1920 creamery building that recalls the area's dairy-farming past. The Cedar Run Antique Center on Elk Run Road is a local stop for browsing and shopping.

Schools Catlett is served by Fauquier County Public Schools, and H.M. Pearson Elementary School has a Catlett address. Middle and high school assignments depend on the exact address, so we always recommend confirming school zoning with Fauquier County Public Schools for any specific property.
