Founded in 1810 and named after Revolutionary War hero Joseph Warren, Warrenton is the county seat of Fauquier County — sitting about 48 miles west of Washington, D.C. via I-66. The town's social calendar is built around Old Town: the Old Town Warrenton Fall Festival draws 20,000–25,000 visitors annually and has been named one of the top 20 events in the Southeastern U.S., while the Warrenton Farmers Market runs Saturday mornings from late April through late November. The Warrenton Branch Greenway offers walking trails and features a restored red caboose, a nod to the area's railroad history.

Warrenton also has deep roots in Virginia's horse-racing tradition — the famous Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase was founded by sportsmen who met at the Fauquier Club in Warrenton, and the race originally ran at Warrenton's Broadview Race Course before moving to nearby Great Meadow in The Plains in 1982, where it's held today. It remains one of the region's defining spring traditions and a genuine reflection of the area's deep hunt-country roots.

Schools Warrenton is served by Fauquier County Public Schools, with Fauquier High School (the county's oldest, founded 1963) serving much of the town.
