Reston

A pioneering planned community in Fairfax County, with man-made lakes, village centers, more than 55 miles of paths, and Silver Line Metro access.

Reston is served by three residential zip codes: 20190, 20191, and 20194. (20195 is a PO Box–only zip, and several other Reston zips are non-residential.)

Reston was founded on April 10, 1964, by Robert E. Simon — the name comes from his initials, R.E.S. — as a planned community built around the idea of "Work, Play, Live," mixing housing, green space, and commercial areas in one place. It's an unincorporated community in Fairfax County, about 9 miles from Tysons and about 5 miles from Washington Dulles International Airport.

Lakes, Trails, and Open Space Reston is built around its green space. There are four man-made lakes — Lake Anne, Lake Audubon, Lake Newport, and Lake Thoreau — plus more than 55 miles of walking and hiking paths and the 72-acre Walker Nature Education Center. The 45-mile W&OD Trail also runs through Reston. Parks, recreation facilities, and trails are managed by the Reston Association, so most homeowners pay an annual Reston Association assessment — something we always walk our buyers through up front.

Lake Anne and Reston Town Center Lake Anne Plaza was Reston's first village center, built around the lake and its jet fountain, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. Every Saturday from late April through November, the Reston Farmers Market sets up in the Lake Anne Village Center parking lot (8 a.m. to noon; 2026 season runs April 25 through November 21).

Reston Town Center is the community's downtown — a 460-acre mixed-use district that opened its first four blocks in 1996. Its outdoor ice skating pavilion opens for the season on November 6, 2026 and runs through March 14, 2027, weather permitting.

Metro Access Reston is served by the Silver Line. Wiehle-Reston East opened in 2014, and Reston Town Center station opened in November 2022, serving the western half of Reston.

Schools Reston is served by Fairfax County Public Schools. South Lakes High School serves most of Reston, Langston Hughes Middle School is Reston's only middle school, and students in the far northern part of Reston attend Herndon High School. As always, we recommend verifying school assignment for any specific address.
