Why Become a Realtor?
Thinking about a career in real estate?
On the surface, it looks simple: houses are expensive, commissions seem big, and you might think, “How hard could it be? Sell a few homes, collect a check, and you’re set.”
That’s exactly how I thought when I first got started. Honestly, I was chasing the money. I did the math on average home prices and commissions, and figured it was a piece of cake — we’d be rich in no time.
Turns out, there’s no cake without a lot of learning… and a lot of working.
The Rewards of a Real Estate Career
Even with its ups and downs, real estate can be an incredibly rewarding profession.
Flexibility – You can set your own schedule and design a business that fits your life.
Unlimited potential – There’s no ceiling on what you can earn, but there is a direct connection between effort and results.
People over property – Yes, you help with homes, but more importantly, you walk families through one of the biggest decisions of their lives.
Independence – You’re building a business you own, even if you hang your license with a brokerage.
Our Real-Life Experience
My wife, Lourdes, and I have been at this for 20+ years. Over two decades in real estate will humble you, teach you, and shape you in ways you can’t predict.
One of the greatest advantages for me personally has been working with my spouse — my partner in life and in business. Not many people can say they get to spend most of their day with their wife. Maybe some wouldn’t want to 🤣🤣 … but I did.
And here’s the thing: it’s taught us patience, better communication, and the importance of supporting each other. Real estate isn’t just a career — it’s been a life lesson in discipline and lifelong learning.
We’ve gone through hard times and really good times. After years working with a big-box brokerage, about three years ago we took another leap of faith and started our own brokerage. Just when you think you have it all figured out, life throws you a curve ball.
But that’s the beauty of it: you never stop learning. And some of our favorite blessings have been the clients we’ve met along the way — many of whom have become like family.
Who Thrives in Real Estate?
Real estate isn’t for everyone. The most successful Realtors share a few key traits:
- Self-motivation – Nobody’s standing over you with a time clock.
- People skills – Listening, understanding, and caring about clients matters more than closing “deals.”
- Problem-solving – No two transactions are the same, and something always comes up.
- Resilience – You’ll get knocked down (sometimes by the market, sometimes by a deal falling apart). The key is bouncing back.
Why Now?
Northern Virginia is one of the strongest housing markets in the country. Even with shifting mortgage rates and changing buyer needs, there’s constant demand for professional agents who know the area and care about people.
If you’ve ever wondered, “Could I be good at real estate?” — the answer depends less on your background and more on your willingness to learn, adapt, and serve.
Looking Ahead
For me, even after 20+ years, I feel like I’m still learning and just starting to figure things out. I hope I’m blessed with many more years in this business — building relationships, serving families, and picking up new lessons along the way.
If you’re curious about the nuts and bolts of getting started, stay tuned. In Part 2 of this series, we’ll break down the licensing process in Virginia and exactly what steps it takes to get from idea → to Realtor.
