Avoid These Mistakes When Achieving Minimalist

Minimalism is one of the biggest design trends today. But while taking a minimalist approach to decorating your home can be a great design choice for many, there are certain things you’ll want to keep in mind if you opt for this style.

A recent article from realtor.com outlined mistakes to avoid when trying minimalist decor in your home, including:

  • Don’t go too stark. Minimalist design is all about taking a “less is more” approach by embracing simple, clean lines and neutral color palettes, for example. But if you go overboard with it, your home can feel too stark and impersonal. Instead, make sure to incorporate some personality into your design, like hanging art and/or family photos on the walls, and adding pieces for visual interest, like an accent pillow to add a pop of color to an otherwise neutral space.
  • Don’t have furniture without a function. Part of minimalist design is having fewer pieces of furniture, which makes each room look more spacious. But because you’re going to have less furniture, it’s important to ensure that each piece has a function, and, ideally, multiple functions. Don’t choose pieces simply because of their style or how they look; be intentional in choosing pieces that serve several purposes in the space, like an ottoman that doubles as storage.
  • Don’t be afraid to deviate. You want your home to feel stylish and on-trend. But that doesn’t mean that minimalism is the only design approach you can take. You want your home to feel like you, so if there are other design styles that you love — like boho or beach cottage — don’t be afraid to find ways to incorporate those styles into your mostly minimalist design.
