One of the more nerve-wracking parts of even thinking about buying a house is the fear that your credit score isn't good enough. It's an easy thing to worry about — you hear all the time how important a strong credit score is when it comes to buying a home. But hearing that can make it sound like you need a perfect score to even get started.

A recent survey found that 66% of respondents believed you need near-perfect credit just to secure the best interest rate. It's an understandable assumption. A strong credit score absolutely helps you qualify more easily and often gets you better rates and terms. But needing it to be perfect? That's simply not true.

The Real Bar Is Much Lower Than You Think
For context: only about 1.5% of Americans have a perfect 850 credit score. If perfection were actually required to buy a home, almost no one would qualify. In reality, most lenders consider a score in the high 700s "exceptional" — and you don't even need to be there to get solid rates. Depending on the loan type, buyers can qualify with scores well below that, sometimes even in the 600s.

Why This Myth Actually Costs Buyers
The real issue isn't that people want to improve their credit — that's always a good goal. The problem is when the assumption that it needs to be perfect causes people to delay the process entirely. Instead of finding out where they actually stand, they wait. They assume they're not ready. They put off a conversation with a mortgage professional that could've clarified everything in minutes.

In some cases, buyers spend years chasing a number that was never actually necessary — all while home prices and rates move without them, and they miss out on building equity they could've already been earning.

What We Tell Our Buyers
There are many different loan programs available to buyers, and they all have different credit requirements — there's no one-size-fits-all answer. That's exactly why we always recommend speaking with a couple of different lenders. What doesn't work for one program might work perfectly for another, and the only way to find out is to actually have the conversation instead of assuming the answer.

Bottom Line
You don't need perfect credit to buy a home in Bristow or anywhere in Northern Virginia — you need an honest conversation with a lender who can tell you exactly where you stand. That's often a much shorter and less intimidating conversation than people expect.
